Singaporean conductor Chan Tze Law is Associate Director of Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Music Director of the Singapore Festival Orchestra and the founding Chief Conductor of the Australian International Summer Orchestral Institute.

Chan made his Singapore Symphony Orchestra conducting debut at the invitation of Music Director Lan Shui in 2001. A former scholar at the Royal College of Music in London, he studied with conductors Norman Del Mar, John Forster and Christopher Adey and noted orchestra leaders John Ludlow and Hugh Bean. Widely recognized as a pedagogue, Chan is credited with building the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra into one of the best of its type in Asia during his tenure as its founding music director. He is a founding faculty member of the conservatory where he teaches conducting and professional development and holds the rank of Associate Professor.

Notable recent achievements include critical acclaim by the Australian press, with The West Australian noting Chan ‘…did wonders from the podium…’ in Stravinsky’s ‘Rite of Spring’ and the Hobart Mercury hailing his Mahler’s Sixth Symphony premiere as ‘Triumphant. Singapore’s Straits Times lauded the “admirable unison and shared passion” of Chan’s appearances with the Singapore Festival Orchestra and also proclaimed “… the cause of new music here today could hardly be in better hands…” in recognition of his performances of music by contemporary icons John Adams, Luciano Berio, Pierre Boulez, Chen Yi, Chen Qigang, Gyorgy Ligeti and Tori Takamitsu.

Chan’s concerts have been broadcast several times byABC FM Classics in Australia and he has collaborated with orchestras, choirs and ballets from Asia, Australia, Europe and the USA.He has guest-lectured at world-renowned American conducting pedagogue Gustav Meier’s studio, was twice conductor/Artist-in-Residence at the University of Western Australia and has conducted at Trinity College of Music in London and Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music in Australia. Chan has performed or premiered compositions by major Australian composers James Ledger, Douglas Knehans, Andrew Schultz and Brett Dean and conducted or premiered works by all major Singapore based composers. He conducts the HSBC Youth Excellence Initiative concerts and is also the music director of Singapore’s innovative ‘Orchestra of the Music Makers’.


Chan is a member of the National Arts Council’s Art Resource Panel, Singapore Symphony Orchestra’s Audience Development Committee, Singapore National Youth Orchestra’s Management board and the Singapore Armed Forces Music and Drama Company’s Supervisory board.
